Cork city centre wardens are set to be in place shortly, as the council and Cork Business Association have confirmed that recruitment is “well under way”.

Earlier this summer, Cork City Council announced that it had partnered with the Cork Business Association and An Garda Síochána to launch a recruitment campaign for city centre wardens, as part of a new Community Safety Warden Scheme pilot programme.

The wardens will be a visible presence on city streets, engaging with the public and visitors, supporting businesses, and helping to maintain a safe and inviting environment.

A spokesperson for Cork Business Association told The Echo that the wardens will be a new presence in the city centre. “We see them as Cork city ambassadors, to support residents, tourists, and businesses alike.

“Once hired, the wardens will undergo a detailed training plan, with support from a number of agencies and associations, including CCC and An Garda Síochána, and we hope to have them present on the street by early Q3.”

A council spokesperson added: “The response to the city centre warden post was very positive, and a large number of applications were received. Funding from Cork City Council and the Department of Justice currently allows for the filling of four positions.”

The recruitment process “is well under way”, and Cork City Council is hopeful that the wardens “could be in place during Q3 in 2025”.
