A heavy downpour of rain at around 6pm on Tuesday evening led to deep flooding on at least one road in a Cork suburb to which Cork City Council is responding, it has been confirmed.

Flooding was reported on the Rochestown Road near the entrance to the Thornberry estate and at one point it is clear that the water on the road surface is very deep.

According to a spokesperson for Cork City Council, the authority was responding to the report.

It is understood that the flooding may be linked to a drainage/run off issue in the area.

There was also flooding reported in the Blackrock area. According to Cork City South East Fine Gael councillor Des Cahill, there was what he described as ‘brief flooding’ following a heavy downpour in the area.

“Heavy downpours do create flooding, the ebbing of the waters within 20 minutes usually happens, if there isn’t a capacity issue,” he said, urging people to drive with care when such floods do occur.

“Persistent flooding does require remedial works and the council will address this,” he said.

Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, who represents Cork City South Central, said that he had witnessed the flooding first hand.

"I was in the intense rain and was shocked to see how storm water drains couldn't cope with the speed and intensity of the rainfall," he said. "This is the actual problem we have in Cork, not tidal flooding."
