While not yet a sea of red, the Cork City Council organised Rebel Fan Zone at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh is filling up nicely in advance of the 3.30pm throw in 180 miles up the road when Cork face Tipperary in an historic All Ireland pairing of the Munster arch rivals.
Two giant screens flanking a stage at the City End are broadcasting The Sunday Game – earlier it was Oireachtas TV and, when that was noticed, the channel was switched to TG4’s coverage of the Tour de France.
While in Croke Park, the fans are being regaled by the Artane Band, it’s a mix of chart hits from Red FM which is booming from the giant speakers. Down the centre of the pitch is a line of crowd barriers and up at the Blackrock end, children are playing hurling with their parents while one couple are exchanging the sliothar sweetly between them.
It’s less than an hour to go to the throw in, excitement is building. Can Cork end the 20 year famine or will Tipperary break our hearts?
