All About Cork: ‘Major relief’ as start date set for Lehenaghmore roadworks

The most recent update in the Lehenaghmore Road Improvement Scheme has been hailed a “huge relief” for locals as a start date is officially announced.
Following a competitive tender process, GLAS Civil Engineering has been awarded the contract for the construction of the scheme. A meeting was held with Glas last week to discuss preparations and timelines.
Works are scheduled to commence in early August, following the builders’ holidays.
The update, issued by senior engineer John Stapleton, reveals that electronic signs will be placed in the area to notify residents and road users of the upcoming construction.
Glas has also appointed a liaison officer to communicate with residents, businesses, and stakeholders throughout the project.
A letter drop will be sent to all affected parties before works begin, with contact details and further information.
Sinn Féin councillor for the city’s South West ward, Joe Lynch, has welcomed the appointment of the contractor to undertake delivery of the long-awaited Lehenaghmore Road Improvement Scheme.
Cllr Lynch said: “This is news that the community in Lehenaghmore have been waiting for years to hear – that a contractor to deliver the long-awaited Road Improvement Scheme in the area has been appointed and that works will start within weeks.
“This will come as a major relief to so many and will finally see the installation of critical footpath and road infrastructure in Lehenaghmore.
“This saga has been going on for many years, and I am delighted that a clear timeline for delivery has now been set out.”
The first site compound will be located off the Togher Slip from the N40.
The second compound is proposed near the southern end of the project, at Lehenaghmore Park. Final Compulsory Purchase Order notices will be issued to affected landowners within the next two weeks by Cork City Council’s property department.
The scheme will take approximately 18 months, allowing for phased works and continued access.
A detailed traffic and construction plan will be shared prior to the commencement of works.
Mr Lynch has advised residents that he will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
The update works come after lands adjoining the Lehenaghmore Road (L2455) and Togher Road (L2454) were significantly developed over recent years.
Residential estates such as Matthew Hill, Coolkellure, Manor Park and Aisling Court have all resulted in a higher demand for improved transport infrastructure between Lehenaghmore and the broader city, with particular demands for improved public transportation services and safe active travel infrastructure.

Free sunscreen in parks
Clashduv Park is one of four public parks in Cork that began offering free sunscreen this week.
The sunscreen dispensers are available for free at Marina Park, Fitzgerald Park, Clashduv Park, and Meelick Park.
Speaking on the project, Labour Councillor Peter Horgan said: “I spoke with Irish Cancer Society in April who highlighted the benefits of sunscreen dispensers for the public and working with officials in Cork City Council and HSE south west, we’ve established a pilot project across four parks in the city.
“Public health is at the heart of what we should be doing as a city and I will work with my Labour Party colleagues on Cork City Council and in the Oireachtas to keep funding and expanding this and other measures.”
