New grant scheme to enhance Cork town centres

A new grant scheme will provide financial assistance to spruce up buildings in town centres across the county.

The scheme, which has been announced by Cork County Council, will be available to tenants or owners of occupied buildings in key locations within towns across the eight municipal districts of Cork county.

The streetscape enhancement scheme will allow owners and tenants to apply for financial assistance to improve the appearance of their buildings, with priority being given to occupied commercial premises.

The scheme includes four support measures, ranging from 60% grants for works to 100% for materials.

Aspects covered include painting and improvements to shop-front signage as well as the cost of materials.

The council will offer applicants guidance on colour palette and design, conservation of traditional Irish shop fronts, and the use of the Irish language in signage.

The council said applications would be considered on a case-by-case basis, “having regard to positive impact on the streetscape”.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Independent councillor Mary Linehan-Foley, said she would encourage business and property owners to engage with the council to avail of the scheme, and to spread the word among neighbouring businesses.

“I wholeheartedly welcome this scheme, which will give a boost to our town centres by supporting businesses and property owners in improving their buildings, and making our town centres more attractive to residents and visitors alike,” said Ms Linehan-Foley.

Cork County Council chief executive Moira Murrell said the scheme would facilitate improvement in the appearance of town centres.

“I look forward to seeing the impact of this scheme on the streets of our town centres across the county,” said Ms Murrell.

Applications are open at www.corkcoco.ie, and the closing date is Friday, August 22, with successful applicants contacted directly.
