A new park on Cork’s northside has been officially opened.

Tinker’s Cross Park located in Mayfield was unveiled by the Lord Mayor Cllr Dan Boyle, as part of a €100k investment into the development of community facilities in the area.

Cork City Council confirmed that work on the new park commenced in November of 2024 and was funded by the Community Recognition Fund.

As well as funding the Tinker’s Cross Park project, the €100,000 is also being used to develop a playground at the Village Pitches in Lotabeg.

This fund aims to support the development of community facilities in recognition of the contribution being made by communities in welcoming and hosting significant numbers of arrivals from Ukraine and other countries.

Welcoming the opening of the new facility, Labour councillor for the North East Ward, John Maher said: “I’m delighted to play my part in working with my ward colleagues in delivering this amenity for the people of the North East ward and for the people of Cork city. I’m encouraging everyone to come and use this and enjoy it.

“There is a small bit of work yet to be done.

“We are working on a nature-based play area and some public lighting, but I believe this is a great amenity that hopefully in time will link Tinker’s Cross to the Glenn River and onto Blackpool on one side.

“On the right, we can link down into Glanmire and link to the Glounthaune greenway,” Cllr Maher continued.

“This is a really welcome addition to our community. I am encouraging everyone to get out and use it and we will continue to work to develop this as an ultimate resource for the city.”

Green Party councillor for Cork City North East, Oliver Moran, welcomed the new amenity and said: “The purpose of this funding is special, too. It’s to support communities that have welcomed people from Ukraine and other countries over the past number of years.

“An appropriate way of celebrating that is with places that children, regardless of background, can play together,” he added.
