Cork County Council, in partnership with Cork City Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), announced a call for submissions for the public art commission on Monday.

Artists have been invited to submit proposals for a sculpture to be permanently located at Cork’s Dunkettle Interchange, with a budget of €375,000.

Cork County Council, in partnership with Cork City Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), announced a call for submissions for the public art commission on Monday.

Visual artists and artist teams are invited to create proposals for a permanent sculpture as part of the Dunkettle Interchange Per Cent for Art Scheme, a government initiative which allows for 1% of the cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural and building development to be allocated to the commissioning of a work of art.

Irish and international artists are invited to propose permanent sculptural works, with the winning artwork to be selected through an open, two-stage competition. The budget for the artwork is €375,000.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Joe Carroll said: “Cork County Council is delighted to announce the Dunkettle Interchange Per Cent for Art Scheme alongside our partners Cork City Council and TII.

“This is a great opportunity for Cork to have a landmark artwork at a gateway to the City and County. For the successful artist, it means their work will be seen by thousands of people every day.

“An average of 95,000 vehicles use the junction daily and we look forward to seeing the artwork that will go alongside this impressive feat of engineering.” The deadline for applications is noon on August 12, and further information on the steps involved in the commissioning process is available from www.corkcoco.ie.

The artwork commission is organised through Cork County Council, supported by a Public Art Working Group, comprised of representatives from Cork City Council, Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Funding for the project has been provided through Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
