Construction underway on major infrastructure projects in Cork

Construction is underway in six infrastructure projects across the city currently, with a new bridge expected in the coming weeks, Cork City Council have said.

Projects at construction include Beamish and Crawford Bridges - a southern bridge linking to French’s Quay/Proby’s Quay was installed last month, and a second bridge from Lamley's Lane to Wandesford Quay is due for installation in coming weeks.

The Parliament Bridge Refurbishment is projected to be complete by the end of August. Works include repairing the stone parapet which was damaged in a collision in May 2024, as well as the cleaning and repointing of facades and parapets and the replacement of footways and kerbs.

Works are “substantially complete” on the Mahon Area Pedestrian/Cycle Scheme, which aims to provide safer streets and multi-modal links to schools and other amenities.

Also under construction is Marina Park Phase 2, which extends from the Atlantic Pond to Church Avenue in Blackrock and includes a nature zone, accommodating picnic areas, boating facilities, adventure play, preserved marshland zone and several architectural heritage sites - the work is projected to be complete at the end of 2025.

The redevelopment of Bishop Lucey Park, which was closed for redevelopment in December 2023, as well as works to upgrade the public realm around South Main Street, Tuckey Street and Crosses Green are also set to be complete at the end of this year.

The Morrison’s Island Public Realm and Flood Defence Scheme is expected to be completed by summer 2026, delivering upgraded streetscape, a wide riverside walkway, a new plaza at the eastern end of the South Mall and a redesigned Trinity Bridge, as well as flood protection for approximately 400 city centre properties. Construction is currently underway at the Parnell Plaza site (end of South Mall) and at the site from Holy Trinity Church to Parliament Bridge, and preparatory works are also underway at the Trinity Bridge section of the project.

Works have just started on the Ballyvolane Strategic Corridor, improving and upgrading Ballyhooly Road from North Ring Road junction to Fox & Hounds junction and onwards to Mervue Lawn, as well as along Ballyvolane Road from North Ring Road to Banduff Road.

 Construction is projected to last 18 months, meaning work should be complete by the end of 2026.

Other projects at earlier stages of development include the Lehenaghmore Road Improvement Scheme, which is at tender/contractor appointment stage.

There are also several infrastructure projects at the planning or design stages covering areas including the Cork Northern Distributor Road, the North West Regional Park and Docklands Amenity Facilities, street renewal projects such as Emmet Place, Cook St/Marlboro St/ Prince's St, the urban regeneration work ongoing in the docklands and active travel projects.
