The community in Kanturk will rally around to support the family of the man from the North Cork town who lost his life in a drowning accident in the River Blackwater near Mallow on Wednesday evening, Cork North West TD John Paul O’Shea has said.

The man, believed to be 39, got into difficulty in the water at Dysert, Dromagh, near Mallow at around 7pm on Wednesday evening. The alarm was raised shortly afterwards.

The Garda Press Office has indicated that the body of the man was recovered from the water downstream by members of the Cork County Fire service.

It was removed afterwards to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem to take place. A file is to be prepared for the North Cork Coroners’ Court for an inquest to take place at a later date.

The victim’s name has not been confirmed publicly yet pending the notification of relations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, John Paul O’Shea “described the incident as a “terrible tragedy”.

“My thoughts are with this man’s family, neighbours and friends,” he said. “The community here is in shock and very traumatised by the events yesterday evening.

“We will all rally around as a community over the coming days.”
