The winner of Ireland’s Best Baker has been named as Mary Buckley from Rathcoole, Cork, as Ireland’s best bakers were recognised this week.

Announced on World Baking Day, Mary Buckley’s award-winning scones saw her take home the prestigious title of Ireland’s Best Baker and a €3,000 cash prize, while Leah Mallinson from Kildare was named the Junior Baker of the Year and awarded a €1,500 prize.

Organised by convenience group, Gala Retail, the final was held during a live bake-off event at Airfield Estate in Dundrum, Dublin, with the winners announced on Ireland AM.

The competition, launched earlier this year, called on amateur bakers to share their best home-baked creations, showcasing the talent and passion for baking that exists throughout Ireland.

The judging panel was led by baking expert Catherine Leyden and TikTok star Alice Kelly.

Reflecting on her win, Ms Buckley said: “I still can’t believe it. I’m completely overwhelmed in the best way! I’ve been baking since I was a young girl, and scones have always held a special place in our family.

“I’ve passed the recipe down to my children and now my grandchildren, so to have them cheering me on and encouraging me to enter meant the world. I wasn’t going to go for it, but they convinced me, and I’m so glad they did.

“To be crowned Ireland’s Best Baker is just incredible. I’m so grateful to Gala Retail and Virgin Media TV for this amazing experience.

“From the moment I arrived at the final in Airfield Estate, Dundrum, to seeing myself on Ireland AM, it’s all an unforgettable experience.”

Gala Retail CEO Gary Desmond said: “Gala stores are at the heart of communities across Ireland, and this competition has highlighted the incredible baking talent within those communities. From traditional family recipes passed down through generations to creative twists on classic bakes, the standard was exceptional.

“Congratulations to Mary, Leah, and all of the finalists. Their dedication, creativity, and love for baking captured what this competition was all about. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing that to life.”
