Men’s Shed receive award

A Mayfield group were recognised at the Lord Mayor’s Community Voluntary Awards last Wednesday night at City Hall.

The awards were presented to one overall winner and to six category winners, with members of the public nominating community and voluntary groups who do great work in Cork city.

Mayfield Men’s Shed was named the winners in the Recreation Sport Health and Wellbeing category at the ceremony, which marked the 22nd edition of the awards.

St Patrick’s College student art

A colourful exhibition of art from the third year students of St Patrick’s College, Gardiner’s Hill, opened at Mayfield Library on May 1.

The collage work is inspired by Henri Matisse, the popular French visual artist. The exhibition will run throughout the month of May.

Mayfield book clubs

The Pageturners Junior Book Club at Mayfield Library took part in ‘Junior Juries’ voting to find the KPMG 2025 overall winner for best children’s book. The award is organised by Children’s Books Ireland and the winner will be announced at a ceremony at the International Literature Festival in Dublin on May 19.

The Pageturners reviewed and submitted their feedback for four of the books on the final shortlist — Stitch by Padraig Kenny; Fia and the Last Snow Deer by Eilish Fisher; The Faerie Isle by Sine Quinn and Dermot Flynn, and The Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Irish Lighthouses by David Hare and Linda Fahrlin.

A May highlight for members of the Frank O’Connor Book Club at Mayfield Library was a visit to Lakemount Gardens on Barnavarra Hill, Glanmire.

Executive librarian Richard Forrest told The Echo: “Those who made the trip enjoyed a glorious hour in May sunshine exploring the two acre wonderland now approaching full bloom. The gardens are open for group visits by appointment.”

Summer swim camps

Westbury Swim School will run swim camps this summer for children aged three to seven in Lota Pool, Mayfield.

The beginner swim camp is perfect for pre-schoolers aged three to five, and young swimmers aged five to seven.

The camp will run for four Saturdays from June 7 to 28, with classes at 9am, 9.30am, 10am, and 10.30am.

There are small class sizes, ensuring individual attention and confidence-building, and the instructors will be in the pool, guiding each child.

The course, aimed at helping children feel comfortable and confident in the pool, will teach both front and back strokes as well as essential skills for safe swimming.

They will also offer sensory-friendly parent-and-child swim classes designed for children with additional needs. These sessions will provide a calm, supportive environment, with parents joining their child in the water to encourage confidence, comfort, and engagement. Suitable for ages three to seven.

There are limited slots in the camps, so book early by emailing: swimcamplota@hotmail. com.
