More than €240,000 has been raised at the Annual Cork Simon Community Ball – a 26% increase on funds raised at previous events.

The gala event, which took place at Fota Island Resort last month, saw €243,000 raised for the service, marking a significant increase of more than €50,000 on funds raised in 2024.

Organisers of the event have said that this year’s donations stand as the most raised in one night in the history of the ball.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who was in attendance on the night, said the amount of funds raised highlights the “generosity” of people across Cork.

Proud

“I was delighted to attend the 23rd Annual Cork Simon Ball and proud of the effort of our local business community in getting behind the organisation’s hugely important work,” said Mr Martin.

“Cork Simon is supporting men and women who are homeless with expert care through difficult and complex circumstances.

“The funds raised represent the generosity and community spirit of the people of Cork.”

All funds from the event will go towards the Cork Simon service, which has said it is currently experiencing a surge in requests and meeting more people than ever who are sleeping rough.

According to the Department of Housing, there are a record 688 men and women in emergency accommodation in Cork and Kerry, representing a 27% increase over 12 months.

Biggest difference

Outgoing co-chair of the Cork Simon Ball voluntary organising committee, John Burchill of the Hayfield Manor, said the funds raised will have the “biggest difference” on those who need it most.

“Everybody we asked to support Cork Simon said yes, from sponsors, to attendees to event suppliers. The generosity from the community was heartening,” said Mr Burchill.

“It’s a difficult time and we know these funds will support more people in ways that will make the biggest difference to their lives.”

The annual ball has raised €1.8 million since it’s inception and is an opportunity for Cork companies to work together as a community to raise funds that will help support Cork Simon’s life-changing work within the homeless community across Cork.
