Cork County Council has been urged to set up toy libraries so that children can share, swap and find new toys — and do their bit for the environment at the same time.

According to Cork North-West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea, facilities similar to those available in libraries elsewhere could be established in local libraries and this “would reduce consumption of toys, save money for families, and facilitate access to play for children”.

“There are so many benefits for families and children when they have access to a toy library,” he said.

“Toy libraries allow families to borrow or donate toys so children can try new things and give them back when they are no longer interested.

“Toys are some of the biggest generators of plastic waste on the planet, with as many as 80% of toys ending up in landfill, incinerators, or the ocean once children are done with them.

“By using a toy library, children can try out toys and see what they like and don’t like without parents having to buy new toys.

“The new Toy Libraries Ireland association will provide information, resources, and training for groups that want to set up a non-profit toy library.

“We have seen successful toy libraries in Carrickmacross, Monaghan and Clonmel, Tipperary that could be used as a model for potential toy libraries in Cork.

“Anyone thinking about starting their own toy library can register on www.toylibrariesireland.org.

“I encourage Cork County Council to set up toy libraries through our vast library structure we have across Cork.

“There is a clear need for toy libraries, and every family should be able to access one.”
