Cork Traffic: Dunkettle live stream disabled pending review

Michael Kennedy, head of regulatory and administration at TII, explained that the live video streams were disabled as part of an ongoing review of their use 12 months after the completion of the Dunkettle interchange upgrade.

A traffic live stream at the Dunkettle interchange have been disabled pending a review, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have said.

Live traffic video streams at Dunkettle were previously available on a dedicated traffic website and app in order to inform motorists of traffic conditions during the construction of the Dunkettle interchange.

Cork City Council initially installed the traffic monitoring cameras, but they are now overseen by TII.

Michael Kennedy, head of regulatory and administration at TII, explained that the live video streams were disabled as part of an ongoing review of their use 12 months after the completion of the Dunkettle interchange upgrade.

“A decision as to whether to recommence the live feed will be made as part of the overall considerations as to how best to inform motorists of traffic conditions during the upcoming M28 scheme construction works,” he said.

Images from the Dunkettle interchange cameras, along with the remainder of the cameras on the N40 and for other locations across the national road network can still be viewed at the TII Traffic website.

Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central Thomas Gould, to whom the information on the cameras was provided via parliamentary question, said that he has been contacted by people who used the camera system at the Dunkettle ahead of their morning commute.

“These cameras were shut off out of the blue and people were left in the dark. We have no problem with a review being undertaken but it is unclear why the cameras could not remain operational pending the review,” he told The Echo.

“This will force commuters to leave for work earlier and cause more traffic chaos. It will also encourage people to bypass the Dunkettle completely, which flies in the face of the road upgrades.”
