Mayfield students awarded for environmental film work

Mayfield Community School has congratulated a group of students for winning a special award for an environmental film project last week.

The Rubbish Film Festival, jointly funded by Cork County Council and Cork City Council, challenges transition-year students to create one-minute films tackling key environmental issues, including climate change, sustainability and waste reduction.

Mayfield students Theia Harris-Murphy, Jamie Hogan, Ava O’Mahony, Ruby Ridgeway, Meiling Lin and Laura Mason attended the ceremony at the Education Centre in Fota Wildlife Park on Monday, March 31 .

They joined transition-year students from across Cork city and county for the awards, which students from 26 Cork schools attended, with eight taking home prizes.

Prizes were awarded for best film, runner-up, The Special Impact Award and a poster competition.

A spokesperson for Mayfield Community School told The Echo: “We’re delighted with the success of our transition-year students who took place in the Rubbish Film Festival this year.

“At the awards ceremony held at the Education Centre in Fota Wildlife Park, our students swooped the award for most impact.

“The Rubbish Film Festival has students create a 60-second film that helps raise awareness around the sustainable development goals of reducing consumption and combating climate change.

“Our students had two one-day workshops, and, in this time, learned about the sustainable development goals, created a film script and edited their film.

“The awards day was a great celebration, and our students were delighted with their success and the whole experience of the Rubbish Film Festival.”

The school also congratulated fellow transition-year students Lili-Anna, Phoenix and Ruby, who conducted a mini-company stall in Supervalu Mayfield last week, selling customised bracelets and key chains.

The girls are donating proceeds to North Lee Disability Services, to help support people in the local community with disabilities.

The school thanked Supervalu Mayfield for allowing them to set up their stand there, saying: “The girls were very grateful for the support and enjoyed the experience.”

Seamus Murphy’s ‘Stone Mad’ republished by Mercier

The classic Cork autobiography Stone Mad by Seamus Murphy has just been republished by Mercier Press, based in St Luke’s.

Seamus Murphy (1907–1975) was a sculptor and stone carver, and his carvings of statues, monuments, gravestones, and plaques can be found scattered throughout city and county, and further afield.

Mayfield librarian Richard Forrest explained: “His autobiography shows clearly that his talent extended beyond expression in stone.

“Full of wit, wisdom and insight into a world and way of life now irrevocably changed.

The autobiography is now available to buy at Mercier, St Luke’s, or to borrow through the Mayfield library.

Funds were also awarded to Brian Dillon’s Hurling and Football Club, which got €31,769 for their community hall to fund the repair of the roof.

Promoting brain health

Mayfield Sports Complex facilitated a Community Connect Event at the end of March in their sports hall, with activities and demonstrations, as well as educational talks from medical and sports professionals and family members of affected people with brain conditions.

The event, entitled My Moving Brain, aimed to raise awareness of brain health and promote inclusivity in sports for individuals of all ages impacted by brain conditions.

Attendees had an opportunity to meet with research and advocacy groups, hear from experts and those with personal experience of engaging in physical activity with a brain condition and try out different sports.
