The two women who died following a head on collision in Mallow, Co Cork yesterday afternoon have been named locally as Mary Coughlan (64) of Kings Square, Mitchelstown, Co Cork and Susan O’Sullivan (41) from Beechwood Park in Mallow.

Emergency services attended at the scene of the incident which occurred shortly before 4pm yesterday on the N72 Killarney to Mallow Road. Ms Coughlan and Ms O’Sullivan, who were the drivers of separate vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Coughlan was the sole occupant of her car. Ms O’Sullivan was travelling with her children who are aged five and age. The boy and girl were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Susan and her children had visited family in Boherbue and were on their way back home to Mallow when the fatal crash occurred. The bodies of both women were taken to the city mortuary in the aftermath of the crash.

Public representatives in both Mallow and Mitchelstown have shared their condolences, with TD for Cork North West John Paul O’Shea saying: “This is a terrible tragedy.

“The N72 is the main road between Mallow and Killarney with a lot of traffic on it always. I am very saddened to hear we have a number of fatalities and also a number of people seriously injured. My thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible tragic road traffic accident.” Mallow

Councillor Tony O’Shea said: “My condolences are with the families of the deceased, and I hope the injured make a full recovery. The whole area is numb and on Mother’s Day for these families it’s horrific.”

Fermoy Councillor Frank O’Flynn added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this exceptionally sad time, the loss of life is very sad especially on Mother’s Day - I hope the children have a speedy recovery.” Meanwhile, gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the crash which occurred at Navigation Road in Mallow at 3.50pm yesterday.
