The Office of Public Works (OPW) are assessing tenders for the new Macroom Garda station and hope to issue a letter of intent to a preferred bidder in the coming weeks.

The proposed station for Macroom will also serve as a new divisional Garda headquarters for Cork County, replacing the divisional hub in Bandon.

The new headquarters in Macroom will include a two-, three- and four-storey building, around a secure courtyard, with adjacent secure car parking on a green-field site on the Millstreet Rd side of the town.

Progress

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea has welcomed confirmation that progress is being made on the new Garda station.

“I recently raised the issue with my colleague, Jack Chambers TD, who is minister for public expenditure and has responsibility for the National Development Plan delivery,” Mr O’Shea said.

“He has informed me that the OPW, who are managing the development of the division headquarters on behalf of An Garda Síochána at Gurtenroe, Macroom, are currently assessing tenders and hope to be in a position to issue a letter of intent to a preferred bidder in the coming weeks.”

Mr O’Shea added: “This is very welcome news, which I know will be warmly welcomed in Macroom and surrounding areas.”

Long overdue

Local Macroom Fine Gael councillor Ted Lucey also welcomed the progress in relation to Macroom Garda station.

“This project is long overdue, but I am delighted we are now making real progress in the new Garda HQ for Macroom,” Mr Lucey said.

“I hope we can see the contractor on site here as soon as is practically possible, as the current working conditions for gardaí are very poor.

“It is great to see this project finally coming to fruition.”
