Dog owners must ‘be responsible’, Minister says during visit to Cork

Speaking in Ballincollig on Monday, Dara Calleary, rural and community development minister, said the majority of dog owners are aware of their responsibilities, but some are not and need to be told.

A national campaign to remind dog owners of their responsibilities has been launched.

The campaign, ‘It’s not your dog’s fault, it’s yours’, highlights the responsibility of dog owners and the harm that uncontrolled dogs can do to people and livestock.

Speaking in Ballincollig on Monday, Dara Calleary, rural and community development minister, said the majority of dog owners are aware of their responsibilities, but some are not and need to be told.

“We want to support dog owners in doing that,” Mr Calleary said.

“There are resources available, but in terms of controlling your dog, particularly in public spaces, your dog has to be under control. Everybody thinks their dog would never do anything, but, unfortunately, things happen.

“Respect for your fellow public, respect for farmers, respect for people who may have a fear of dogs: Your dog is your responsibility.

“We all love our dogs, but you have to be responsible for them as well, and we want to remind people of that responsibility.”

The campaign follows a series of other recent initiatives. Since December 1, 2023 pet owners who do not have ‘effectual control’ of their dog have been liable for an on-the-spot fine of €300.

Last year saw the introduction of regulations to ban XL Bully type dogs. The Government has also committed to the recruitment of up to 40 additional dog wardens this year.

The campaign will run from March 24 until April 20 across radio, podcasts, print, out of home, and online media.
