Iarnród Éireann has highlighted its plans for growth, sustainability, and enhanced connectivity at a briefing event for local stakeholders in Cork.
Future plans focus on electrification, decarbonisation, and expanding the rail network to nearly 3,000 km.
Faster intercity services, increased capacity, and improved connectivity will bring 700,000 more people within 5 km of a railway station, enhancing links between key transport hubs and boosting regional development.
Under the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, approximately €24 billion will be invested in rail infrastructure over 25 years, averaging €960 million per year.
Jim Meade, CEO of Iarnród Éireann said: "Iarnród Éireann is proud of our vision for a more connected, sustainable, and efficient rail network. With significant investments in electrification, new trains, and new and upgraded infrastructure, we’re laying the foundation for a network that supports regional growth and meets Ireland’s climate goals.
The Cork Area Commuter Rail programme will deliver increased train capacity and frequency, providing for more connected communities and a more sustainable transport network. The programme represents the largest ever investment in the Cork commuter rail network and will deliver the vision set out by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS).
