The family of Daniel Hogan of Mayfield held a remembrance event on Sunday, February 23, on the fourth anniversary of his death.

The event, in support of Shine A Light Suicide and Mental Health Awareness, had family- friendly activities and an information stand with mental health awareness information, wallet cards, and wristbands.

Held at Kerrigan Tyrell Community Centre in Mayfield, the event saw nearly 30 different spot prizes given out following donations from local businesses.

Prizes included a €200 Dunnes Stores voucher, sponsored by GMC Electrical, a 12-week nutrition/life coaching programme by The Mindshed, and eight PT fitness sessions by Elevate Fitness, as well as make-up, hair, and nail vouchers from various sponsors.

Event organiser Lauren Hogan told The Echo: “The event was a day of remembrance and connection as well as mental health awareness.

“It was in memory of my brother Daniel who passed away due to suicide in 2021.”

She said she was delighted with how the day went, adding: “There was a really good turnout, and we raised almost €1,700, and many came forward at the event to be referred for counselling support, which was great.

“There was also kids’ entertainment, music, and a really good team of community people there.

Lauren added: “The money goes directly to Shine a Light, who put it back into the community to subsidise or pay for counselling, putting on workshops in schools and community groups, all the places that need it in the locality.

“The main mission of Shine a Light is to reduce instances of suicide and promote mental wellbeing, so hopefully this funding can help to further that mission.”

Shine A Light, set up in response to a spate of suicides on the northside of Cork city, is made up of local people who represent both statutory and voluntary services which promote speaking openly and directly about suicide and related issues.

The main aim of the group is to continually work toward lowering the incidence of suicide in the communities represented, and increase awareness around mental health and suicide.

Glanmire awards ceremony

Several local businesses have been honoured by Glanmire Chamber at the Glanmire Business and Community Awards. The ceremony took place recently, with the winners chosen by an independent panel of judges.

The two winners of the Business of the Year award were Vision of Beauty, in the ‘less than 10 employees’ category, and Vienna Woods Hotel, in the ‘10-plus employees’ category. Brazen Chilli won New Business of the Year.

The Taste of Glanmire award went to The Barn, Best Retail Experience to Diffusion Wear, and Best Use of Digital to Wellbean Coffee.

The sports award went to Sarsfield’s Hurling Club, while Glanmire First Responders won the Outstanding Voluntary Organisation title.

John Sreenan, of the Glanmire First Responders, was honoured with the Gail Dowling Inspiration/Community Award, while Sarah Maher, from Glanmire Opticians, was named Shining Star Employee.

Primary care centre

The expected delivery date for a Glanmire primary care centre is the beginning of 2028, following the refusal of planning permission.

Fianna Fáil councillor for Cork City North East, Margaret McDonnell, asked the HSE at the Regional Health Forum meeting last week for an update on the plans and timeline.

The HSE told her party colleague, Cork North Central TD Pádraig O’Sullivan, late last month: “The developer confirmed to the HSE that an application for planning permission for the primary care centre in Glanmire was lodged with Cork City Council in August, 2024.

“The HSE have been informed that planning permission has been refused for Glanmire Primary Care Centre on January 27, 2025.

“In light of this decision, the HSE will now explore all options for the delivery of a primary care centre in the area.”

Mr O’Sullivan said he was “extremely disappointed” to hear the news of the planning permission refusal, saying: “This is a significant setback and the HSE need to expedite plans to either address the concerns of Cork City Council regarding flood risk and lodge a new planning application as quickly as possible, or find a more appropriate site.

“It’s particularly disappointing, as our existing GP services are in need of additional space, with most GP services unable to accommodate additional patients.”

At the meeting on Thursday, Ms McDonnell was told by Daniel Clifford, assistant national director of estates at HSE South West: “The HSE wish to state that the developer is to lodge an appeal to An Bord Pleanála. The HSE has requested a copy of the developer drawings and when made available will forward on same. It is envisaged the centre will be operational in Q1, 2028,” he added.
