A 41-year-old man was jailed for three years yesterday after over €28,000 cash in small denominations was found wrapped in clingfilm bundles at a house in Douglas when gardaí carried out a drugs search.

The man confessed to dealing cocaine, amphetamines, and cannabis, as well as money laundering of over €28,000.

Judge Helen Boyle imposed a sentence of five years, with the last two years suspended, on Julius Jocys of The Borough, Maryborough Hill, Douglas, Cork, at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Detective Garda Ronan McGuckin testified at the sentencing hearing that gardaí secured a warrant to search the house at Maryborough Hill on April 28, 2023. When they arrived, the accused indicated that there were drugs and cash in the bedroom, and he brought officers to where they were located.

There was approximately €7,000 worth of cocaine, €4,500 of amphetamines, and up to €10,000 of cannabis. He admitted being in possession of the drugs for sale or supply. He also admitted money laundering in respect of €28,525 cash, where it was stated that he knew it was the proceeds of criminal conduct.

Defence senior counsel Elizabeth O’Connell said the accused had a debt, which resulted in him getting involved in this criminality.

However, Judge Boyle remarked at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that there was no evidence of him engaging in drug use.

Ms O’Connell said the accused man had been very stressed and anxious about the possibility of a custodial sentence.
