Cork ladies football legend to feature in upcoming TG4 programme

Bríd Stack, winner of 11 All Ireland senior medals, will feature in this week's edition of Laochra Gael, which will be broadcast on TG4 on Thursday.

A cornerstone of the Cork ladies football team’s golden era, Bríd Stack, will be the focus of this week’s edition of TG4’s long running Laochra Gael series.

The St Val’s player played a pivotal role at full-back in Cork’s dominance of ladies football in the 2000s, winning 11 All-Ireland titles, one of four alongside Deirdre O’Reilly, Briege Corkery and Rena Buckley to amass as many titles, and was described as “a relentless defender and key leader on the pitch”.

She also won seven All-Star awards and was named Ladies’ Footballer of the Year in 2016.

She went to Australia with her family to join the Great Western Sydney Giants in 2021 but within weeks of her arrival down under, she suffered an injury to her vertebra during a pre season game which ruled her out of her debut season.

She announced her retirement from football in December 2022.

Beyond her sporting achievements, Bríd has been a powerful advocate for women’s health, speaking openly about her experiences with miscarriage and the crucial role sport played in helping her through those difficult times.

The Laochra Gael edition on Bríd Stack will be broadcast on Thursday night and will be followed on Thursday, March 6, by an edition focusing on the O’Connor brothers from Newtownshandrum, Ben and Jerry.
