“If this Government is serious about Sláintecare and reorienting the health system towards primary and community care, then it needs to get to grips with these spiralling waiting lists," Cork TD and Social Democrats health spokesperson Pádraig Rice said.

More than 22,000 adults and children are on waiting lists for vital therapies in Cork, according to the latest data from Cork Kerry Community Healthcare (CKCH).

More than 22,000 adults and children are on waiting lists for vital therapies in Cork, according to the latest data from Cork Kerry Community Healthcare (CKCH).

Information from CKCH showed 14,259 children on waiting lists for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and psychology services.

There are also 7,777 adults on waiting lists for these services.

Some 5,290 children and 76 adults are on waiting lists for psychology services, while 3,916 children and 322 adults are awaiting speech and language therapy.

Some 3,671 children and 1,396 adults are on waiting lists for occupational therapy, along with 1,382 children and 5,983 adults waiting on physiotherapy.

A spokesperson for CKCH said: “We are truly sorry to the children and families impacted by waiting times.

“We want to reassure you that urgent cases are given priority so that those in most need can get care as quickly as possible.

“Our main priority is the wellbeing and safety of the children we care for.

“Although we are facing challenges due to increasing demand for services, we have taken steps to improve productivity and reduce waiting times,” they added.

These steps include making changes to improve efficiency, such as checking waiting lists, setting up a text alert system, creating group programmes for specific conditions, and designing an electronic assessment system, all with the aim of reducing administrative work and increasing time on direct care.

The spokesperson also highlighted steps to ensure better use of resources and improved collaborative work, stating: “We are ensuring that our staff and resources are used in the best way possible to deliver services effectively.

“We are partnering with external organisations, healthcare providers, and community groups to increase our capacity and improve access to services.”

CKCH has also started offering remote consultations where possible “to reduce delays and make it easier for families to get the care they need,” they added.

“We are investing in training and development programs to improve our staff’s skills and increase our capacity to meet the growing demand for services.

“While the changes are important, we know there is still more work to do to reduce waiting times. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to find impactful solutions.”

Cork TD and Social Democrats health spokesperson Pádraig Rice said: “The unacceptable delays in our hospitals are well publicised, but the hidden crises in primary and community care are not receiving attention.

“If this Government is serious about Sláintecare and reorienting the health system towards primary and community care, then it needs to get to grips with these spiralling waiting lists.

“This can only be achieved by expanding capacity in the community, and investing in health and social care professionals.”
