Men’s Shed is honoured

Carrigaline Men’s Shed has been honoured by Cork County Council for the outstanding contribution the group makes to life within the local community.

The Men’s Shed was unveiled as the group winner (South Cork) in the 12th annual County Mayor’s Community Awards, at County Hall.

The winning citation outlined how Carrigaline Men’s Shed had grown from 50 members to more than 100 since it was founded in 2012.

“The group moved to a purpose built shed in 2023, providing a welcoming environment for men from Carrigaline and the surrounding areas,” read the citation.

“Their efforts include working with local schools, maintaining a polytunnel, and assisting the Carrigaline Lions Club with various projects, reflecting their community dedication.”

On the night, the Mayor of County Cork, councillor Joe Carroll, presented 11 awards, with Donal Kelly from Castletownbere winning the overall individual award and Bantry’s West Cork Jesters taking home the overall Community Group award.

Mr Carroll congratulated all the nominees and winners describing the event as a significant highlight for his term as mayor.

“The commitment by volunteers and community leaders in County Cork to making their local areas better for all is unparalleled. Their resilience, dedication and community spirit is truly inspiring and these awards are about recognising and celebrating our exceptional nominees,” said Mr Carroll.

Plans for new homes lodged

Plans for the construction of 362 residential units in Carrigaline have been lodged with Cork County Council.

The application, submitted by Bridgewater Homes Ltd, seeks to demolish existing structures on a 12.97 hectare site at Mountain Road, Kilmoney, in order to allow for the construction of a large-scale residential development.

The planned development would include 362 residential units to include 318 dwelling houses, comprising a mix of two-, three- and four-bed semi-detached and townhouse/terraced units, and 44 two-bed apartment/duplex units. It would also include a creche with a community room and café.

Cork County Council is due to make a decision on the application by April 1.
