Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rain warning for Cork today.

The national forecaster has said that Leesider’s can expect spells of heavy rain across South Cork throughout this afternoon, evening and overnight, as the warning comes into effect from 1pm and will last until 8am tomorrow.

Potential impacts include spot flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

A status yellow gale warning will also come into place from midday until midnight, as southeast to east winds will reach gale force 8 on Irish coastal waters from Roche's Point to Loop Head and Bloody Foreland.

In addition, a small craft warning has been put in place for all coasts of Ireland, lasting until 6am.

Founder of Ireland’s Weather Channel and climate scientist at University College Cork, Cathal Nolan, has warned motorists to drive with care during the impacted period.

“The risk [with the yellow weather warning] is of localised flooding in some parts of the county on account of heavy and persistent rain that is expected overnight tonight and through the first half of tomorrow,” said Mr Nolan.

“For motorists it’s a case of being aware of excess spray on the roads, the possibility of aquaplaning, and dangerous driving conditions especially during the morning commute.”
