Motorists breaking the speed limit in the Cork village of Rylane is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed, according to Fine Gael senator Eileen Lynch.

Data gathered by Cork County Council found that almost 90% of drivers were breaking the 50km/h speed limit in Rylane.

One motorist was recorded doing a speed of 143km/h.

The data showed that an average of 1,061 vehicles passed through the village every day, and 86% of all vehicles were exceeding the 50km/h speed limit, with the average speed of those vehicles being 83km/h.

Ms Lynch, who was recently elected to the Seanad, said she had received a number of complaints about the problem of speeding from people in the local area.

Ms Lynch told The Echo: “I am very much aware of speed being an issue.

“It is something that has been raised with me by constituents for the past few months. Actually, for the last few years, I have been raising the issue of speeding in Rylane.

“We saw the installation of speed detector signs two years ago, which, while they made a difference, unfortunately have not resolved the issue.

“They [local residents] called for a further speed survey to be carried out in Rylane.

“There was a bit of a delay with this, unfortunately.

“So it was only last week that we got the updated results, which were quite damning. So it is just a matter of trying to resolve this now and see what is the best way to deal with this issue.”

Ms Lynch added: “Much of it is human behaviour and very difficult to control.

“But I have to start looking at making contact with gardaí over this because it is just not acceptable.

“In the past 12 months, we have seen the opening of the astro and the playground in Rylane.

“There’s a lot more people around, so it is important that we address this issue as soon as possible.”
