South Main Street is set to re-open to traffic in four weeks’ time, as Cork City Council shared an update on the ongoing works there.
Works are continuing on the Beamish & Crawford Quarter, which will see the renewal of the public realm around the medieval core of Cork City – South Main Street, Tuckey Street and Proby’s Quay.
South Main Street is currently closed from its junction at Washinton Street to its junction at Sullivan’s Quay until February 28.
Cork City Council advised: “Works are progressing steadily on South Main Street. The western half of the new granite paving and macadam roadway have now been constructed and the current road closure will allow our contractor to complete the other side.
“The footpath on the western side of the street will be open for pedestrian use throughout the works. South Main Street will remain temporarily closed until February 28 to facilitate these works.” The cycle lane is also closed during this period, though pedestrians are still able to walk down South Main Street and access to homes and businesses along the street is maintained.
The 214 and 216 bus services are currently diverted during the closure. Bus Éireann explained that due to the closure, Route 214 ex Knockraha/Glyntown will operate from Kent Station - Clontarf Street - Terence McSweeney Quay - Anglesea Street - South Terrace - Sullivan’s Quay.
There are temporary bus stops at Clontarf Street; Anglesea Street (City Hall) and Sullivan’s Quay, and the Route 214 ex CUH is not affected.
Route 216 ex Monkstown will operate from George’s Quay, continuing ahead to Sullivan’s Quay and Frenches Quay and as per normal route. There is one temporary bus stop at Sullivan’s Quay.
