Macroom GAA has been granted planning permission to develop a modern gym and dressing rooms at the clubs' base at the Castle Grounds.

In their application to Cork County Council, Macroom GAA sought permission for the demolition of the existing single storey dressing room building with ancillary plant and storage areas and the construction of a new two-storey detached building in its place.

The application said the new building would contain ground floor dressing rooms and storage and a first floor club gym, along with first floor terrace access from the gym floor.

The application, which was subsequently approved by Cork County Council, also sought some additional works including a new plant room and cover area, the re-alignment of the existing boundary fence and all associated works.

A statement released by Macroom GAA welcomed the grant of planning permission for what it says will be a "considerable project" which will require fundraising.

“Macroom GAA is pleased to announce that we have received planning permission to develop a new dressing rooms and a modern gym in the Castle Grounds.

“The Castle Grounds has been our home for a very long time and we are cognisant of its location and history and we are endeavoring to create a home which meets our needs and that we can all be proud of.

“We hope that this development will cater for all of our players and club members long into the future.

“This is a considerable project to undertake and we will need help.

“If anyone would like to assist or has ideas for fundraising we would love to hear from you," the club said.
