Crews from Uisce Éireann have been dealing with flooding which impacted workers entering and leaving their business premises on the Monahan and Centre Park Roads in the Atlantic Pond area of Cork city during Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Roads are under several inches of water in the area at present and remain closed for the time being while work continues.

The flooding is being blamed on an overflow at the Atlantic Pnd wastewater pumping station.

According to Peter Horgan, the Labour Party councillor in the South East ward, the roads in the area are expected to remain closed over night.  "Monahan Road and Centre Park Road are flooded," he said. "Uisce Éireann crews are on the scene.

"No reason has been given for the flooding but I am awaiting a report.

"I'm told from workers in the area that it was difficult to exit offices this afternoon," he said. "A number of premises couldn't open today such was the depth this morning."

A spokesperson for Cork City Fire Brigade confirmed that flooding was reported in the area but that the waters were receding and Uisce Éireann crews were on the scene on Tuesday evening.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night, an Uisce Éireann spokesperson described the flooding as an 'overflow of waste-water'.

"Crews are on the ground working to resolve the issue and mitigate the impact of any overflows," the spokesperson said. "A traffic management plan has been put in place and a number of streets in the locality have been closed in consultation with Cork City Council and An Garda Siochána.

"Uisce Éireann’s incident management team is liaising with the EPA and Cork City Council in relation this incident," the spokesperson added. "Tankers are on site removing excess wastewater overflows.

"We are asking people to avoid the area while this incident is ongoing."
