Gardaí in Cork intercepted two teenagers in the city travelling together on the one e-scooter earlier today, which had been modified to add a seat to it.
Gardaí issued a fine to the owner and also seized the e-scooter which was found not in compliance with the existing legislation.
In a post on Facebook gardaí explained: “We were on patrol in Cork city earlier this afternoon and observed two teenagers travelling on this e-scooter in the middle of a main, public road.
“It was seized and the owner has been given a €100 fine - €50 fine for carrying a passenger and €50 for having a seat on the e-scooter.”
According to the Road Traffic Act 2024, which came into effect in May of last year, e-scooter users must not have a seat on their e-scooter, or carry passengers or goods.
They also cannot use footpaths, pedestrianised areas or motorways, hold or use a mobile phone, and have to be 16 years or older and obey a speed limit of 20km/h.
