All About Cork: Students showcase talents at an LCA Staff Salon Day

Coláiste/Gaelcholáiste Choilm LCA students Saoirse Cullinane, Ciara Bremner, Bláithin Gleeson, and Ailís Gleeson with LCA Hair and Beauty teacher Michelle O’Keeffe
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) students of Coláiste/Gaelcholáiste Choilm, Ballincollig, recently celebrated the LCA Staff Salon Day in their renovated hair and beauty facilities. Organised by LCA Hair and Beauty teacher Michelle O’Keeffe, the event showcased the talents of the course’s students while also supporting a very worthy cause.
Throughout the day, staff members enjoyed a variety of salon services, while students demonstrated professionalism and creativity as they put into practice the skills honed during their Hair and Beauty classes.
Reflecting on the day, Ms O’Keeffe said the day allowed students to work in a professional environment where they could interact with clients, and build their confidence.
“What stands out the most is how dedicated and enthusiastic they are, not just in showcasing their talents but also in giving back to the local community,” she said.
“Seeing the students take such pride in their work while supporting a worthy cause makes this day incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.”
Proceeds from the event were donated to Balance Summer Camps, a local charity supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.
The LCA Hair and Beauty Salon is a product of community generosity, made possible by donations from The Salon, a well-known local hairdresser in Ballincollig.
In recent years, the salon has also hosted industry-leading demonstrations from professionals such as Dapper & Co Barbers, hairdresser Clodagh Farry, and make-up artist Sinead Murray, not only further enhancing students’ learning experience but also preparing them for their practical and written exams at the end of Sixth Year LCA.
Conor Owens, LCA coordinator, reflected on the broader importance of such events: “Days like the Salon Day allow our students to further connect with their school and the wider community.
“It’s inspiring to see how events like this foster pride, responsibility, and a real sense of belonging in our students,” Mr Owens said.
“It is experiences like these that stay with the students long after they leave school.”
