Update 1.30pm:

Gardaí have said an investigation is ongoing following a multi-vehicle collision on the N40 this morning. 

Gardaí attended the scene of an eight car collision on the N40 South Ring Road earlier today. 

"The incident occurred at approximately 7:30am traveling from Mahon Point towards the Kinsale Road Roundabout Westbound," a garda spokesperson said, saying ambulance crews attended the scene "as a precaution".

"The investigation is ongoing," the spokesperson said. 

Update: The incident at junction nine on the N40 has been cleared. 

Earlier: Gardaí are currently at the scene of a collision on the N40 westbound between J09 (Bloomfield) and J08 (Douglas) with motorists advised that traffic in the area is "extremely busy". 

A garda spokesperson told The Echo that drivers should avoid the area if possible.

"Traffic is extremely busy in both directions, with westbound traffic backed up to the Jack Lynch Tunnel.

"Motorists should avoid the area, if possible," they said. 

"As this is an ongoing incident, no further information is available at this time."
