Cork County Council's severe weather assessment team convened this morning to assess the situation following last week's icy and snowy weather.
The weather forecast remains relatively benign for the coming days with a significant change in temperatures being seen. This change should aid in the melting of compacted snow, the local authority said in a statement, although progress may be slow in some locations due to the volume of snow which had fallen. Efforts have been ongoing, with significant work completed at the weekend.
Council crews and contractors remain engaged, with a focus on cleaning and widening roads around key areas in north-west and north Cork.
Crews will continue their efforts, particularly addressing road conditions and potholes arising due to damage caused by the severe weather conditions.
Motorists should be aware that the thaw will be slow in the worst affected areas, leading to treacherous driving conditions, especially on higher elevations.
Road users should be cognisant of compacted snow and mounds on roads and in villages for days to come, making driving hazardous.
Drivers are urged to slow down, even in areas that have thawed, as there may be damage to road surfaces across the county, making driving conditions challenging and unpredictable and care should be taken on all routes.
Overall, Cork County Council have said significant improvements have been made over the last number of days, and efforts will continue to ensure safe passage and address any remaining issues.
Conditions remain challenging in north-west and north Cork and all road users should take extreme care.
The council has worked to ensure access to schools, churches, and other local services across the county and would like to thank the Defence Forces, Cork City Council, contractors, and the communities of County Cork for their efforts and continued support.
