Gardaí have arrested a man for questioning in relation to the murder of 31-year-old Paula Canty, whose body was found in her apartment on Bridewell Lane in Mallow on Friday.

The man, aged in his 40s was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and detained at a garda station in North Cork under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows for gardaí to detain a suspect for up to 24 hours.

A garda spokesperson said investigations into Ms Canty’s death were “ongoing”.

The death of the 31-old-mother of two, who hailed from Kinsale originally, is being investigated as a murder by gardaí in the north Cork town and a senior investigating officer is heading up inquiries based at an incident room at Mallow garda station.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Bridewell Lane, Mallow between 9pm on Thursday, January 2 and 10am on Friday, January 3.

Condolences

Meanwhile, a Mallow-based Cork county councillor has expressed condolences on behalf of townspeople to Paula Canty’s family.

Fianna Fáil councillor Pat Hayes, who operates a business in the town close to the apartment where Ms Canty’s body was discovered said locals were shocked and saddened when news of Ms Canty’s death became known.

“First of all we’d like to extend sincere condolences to Paula’s immediate family and friends,” said Mr Hayes.

“The community is shocked at what has happened, this is so unusual in our town and people are really upset over it.” Ms Canty’s mother, Sinéad, has set up a Go-Fund Me page to benefit the Street Angels charity in Cork in memory of her daughter. In her message on the page, Sinéad Canty said the group provided ‘a brilliant service to all those in need’.

Donations totalling €1,670 have been made to the fund by more than 60 people.

Details of the funeral arrangements for Ms Canty have yet to be announced.
