‘Dark cloud over Mallow’: Town reels in shock as 32-year-old woman found dead in apartment named locally
A young woman, whose body was found in a block of apartments in Mallow on Friday, has been named locally as Paula Canty
Local representatives said the town’s residents were in “shock” as the news broke yesterday afternoon.
The woman has been named locally as 32-year-old Paula Canty, originally from Kinsale.
She had moved to Mallow within the last year and was living in the Belfry Apartments at Bridewell Lane.
The death is being treated as suspicious.
Investigations were ongoing, and further information as to the circumstances surrounding her death are expected to be revealed.
Gardaí issued an appeal for information, saying that they were “investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 30s following the discovery of a body at a residential property in Bridewell Lane, Mallow”.
The assistant state pathologist, Dr Margot Bolster, attended the scene, and the body was removed to CUH for a postmortem.
Gardaí added that a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at Mallow Garda Station.
Ken O’Flynn, Independent Ireland TD for Cork North Central, told : “I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic discovery of a woman’s body in Mallow this morning.
“As someone who has lived in this town for over 20 years, I can truly say that a dark cloud hangs over our close-knit community today.
“The shock and sorrow felt by our residents is palpable. It appears that the woman was well-known and respected among her friends and neighbours, which makes this tragic event hit even harder.”
Mr O’Flynn added: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this lady, as well as all those who knew and loved her.

“I would also like to commend the Gardaí for their swift response and ongoing investigation into this matter.”
Fine Gael councillor for Mallow, Tony O’Shea, added: “It’s very sad and the worst possible news for Mallow in early 2025,” extending his condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co. Cork between 9pm on Thursday 2 January and Friday 3 January, 2025 at 10am.
