Cork HSE experts are sharing their video advice for staying well this winter.

The videos, on YouTube at the HSE South West channel, discuss when to go to the emergency department (ED) and options for emergency care.

Professor Conor Deasy, clinical director of emergency and acute care, highlights Cork University Hospital’s (CUH) urgent virtual care initiative in one video, explaining that GPs can refer patients to the team at CUH, who can do a video consultation and decide on care.

This could involve sending an emergency medicine doctor or a therapist to the patient, or asking the patient to come in to the ED, “in a structured, scheduled way to avoid you sitting in a queue for hours waiting your turn”.

Dr Finn Coulter, consultant in emergency medicine at CUH, said: “We’ll be seeing large numbers of patients in hospitals and in EDs with influenza, and covid: There’s a large outbreak happening currently over in Britain, so remember to get your covid and influenza vaccines and boosters.

“If you do have flu, or flu-like illness, remember, there are many opportunities to see other healthcare professionals, rather than coming to EDs. We’d like to keep the ED just for those who have true emergencies over this Christmas and winter.”

Dr Rebecca Marshall, specialist registrar in public health, said: “You can effectively manage illnesses, like colds and flu, at home by staying hydrated, resting, staying at home, and taking paracetamol.

“Seek advice from your GP, if you have a child who you are concerned about, or if you feel very unwell.”

Priscilla Lynch, HSE integrated healthcare area manager in Cork, said: “There are a number of pathways to help stay well and healthy this winter. Your pharmacist can provide excellent advice on common minor illnesses.

“Contact your GP or out-of-hours GP service if you’re feeling unwell.

“For minor injuries, like cuts, burns, and broken bones, you can visit a local injury unit. In emergencies, visit your nearest emergency department.”
