Cork Migrant Centre and Nano Nagle Place are among organisations’ nationwide bringing the Christmas spirit to children in direct provision.

This festive season, the Cork Migrant Centre and Nano Nagle Place are teaming up with UCC staff and students, and Saoirse EHD, (Ethnic Hands on Deck) to bring the heartwarming project to fruition in Cork.

As part of the project, on Christmas Day, the charities will host festive parties complete with a visit from Santa himself for all the children to enjoy.

Events are part of the ongoing work with local charities on the ‘Your Child is My Child’ campaign, raising much-needed funds for children in direct provision.

Joy

“Seeing the joy on children’s faces when they meet Santa on Christmas Day is truly heart-warming,” said Naomi Masheti of Cork Migrant Centre.

“It doesn’t take much — even a handmade gift and a smile can make a huge difference.

“Our mission is to spread joy and foster connection, and Christmas is the perfect time to do just that.”

The impact of these initiatives is amplified by We Act, a public awareness campaign that highlights the value of Ireland’s charity and community sector.

The campaign is calling on the public to support, engage with, and appreciate non-profit organisations not just at Christmas but throughout the year, enabling them to continue their vital work.

Friendly face

Claire McGowran, We Act campaign manager, said: “From blood donations to gift giving and simply being a friendly face for those who are alone, Irish charities and community groups are going above and beyond to create a magical Christmas for everyone.

“We’re incredibly proud of these hidden heroes who are making Christmas 2024 brighter for communities across the country.”

The We Act campaign is led by a coalition of charities and community groups, including Boardmatch, the Disability Federation of Ireland, Dóchas, The Wheel, and Volunteer Ireland.
