Cork solicitor paid €350k settlement to Revenue after tax audit

The list covers the period between July 1 and  September 30. 

A Cork solicitor and landlord, who made a settlement of more than a third of a million euro, is one of a number of Leeside residents named as tax defaulters by the Revenue Commissioners in the third quarter of this year.

In its latest tax defaulters list, which covers the period between July 1 and September 30, Revenue has detailed 36 case settlements worth a combined €15m.

Terence English, of Ballytore, Woodview, Douglas Road, Cork, is included in a list of tax defaulters in whose case Revenue has accepted a settlement offer instead of initiating court proceedings, or a settlement has been paid in full.

Mr English, whose occupation is listed as “landlord/solicitor”, was found, following an audit, to owe €223,062 in unpaid tax following an under-declaration of income tax.

When €66,320 in interest was added, and €66,917 in penalties, Mr English paid a total settlement of €356,299.

Largest

Of the 36 settlement cases listed by Revenue for the third quarter of this year, the single largest settlement sought was €6,711,237 from property developers Vieira Limited, a company now in liquidation, with an address at Pepper Canister House, Mount Street Crescent, Dublin 2. Vieira Limited was found to owe €2,406,576 in unpaid tax, following an under-declaration of Vat, as well as €3,582,689 in interest, and €721,972.

Of the €6,711,237 owed by Vieira Limited, €6,115,399 remains unpaid.

Revenue has also published a list of people taken to court over unpaid tax in whose case the court has determined a penalty relating to a settlement, or has imposed a fine, imprisonment, or other penalty in respect of a tax or duty offence.There were 29 cases published of court-imposed fines which totalled just under €80,000, with four Cork residents appearing on that list.

Elizabeth Lenihan, listed as a PAYE employee, of Lisnafulla, Broadford, Charleville, was fined €1,250 for claiming income tax relief to which she was not entitled.

Patrick Delaney, occupation not known, of 15 Hillview Drive, Onslow Gardens, Commons Rd, was fined €2,500 for the misuse of marked mineral oil.

John O’Sullivan, a PAYE employee with an address at 11 Willow Bank, Nash’s Boreen, Fairhill, was fined €2,500 for tobacco smuggling.

Maurice Robert Twomey, a taxi driver with an address at 4 Barrack View, off Roman St in Shandon, was fined €2,500 for tobacco smuggling.
