Members of Mayfield Men’s Shed paid a visit to Lord Mayor of Cork, Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, at Cork City Hall recently.

The Mayfield Men’s Shed is a voluntary organisation, providing men with a place for social interaction as well as maintenance of skills in arts, crafts, and other talents that may not be fully realised without such a facility.

The group members, who are famous for their music – recently having a sing-song during a visit to the Dáil – brought their instruments to play music for the lord mayor.

Mr Boyle told The Echo: “I was delighted to invite Mayfield Men’s group to City Hall. A great time was had exchanging stories, songs, and some guitar riffs!”

Anyone wishing to join Mayfield Men’s Shed is invited to go along any Tuesday at 10am to the group’s premises at Kerrigan Tyrrell Community Centre, Tinker’s Cross, Mayfield, T23 E295.

Progress on parks under community recognition fund

A local councillor and general election candidate has welcomed progression on two new parks for the locality, one in Tinker’s Cross and one in Lotabeg, thanks to the community recognition fund.

Both projects were funded through grants from the community recognition fund, totalling €100,000. This fund aims to support the development of community facilities in recognition of the contribution being made by communities in welcoming and hosting significant numbers of arrivals from Ukraine and other countries.

Cork City Council officials have confirmed that a tender has been accepted for a contractor to commence work on a new Tinker’s Cross Park at the end of this month.

A new playground at the village pitches in Lotabeg is in design and Cork City Council hopes to move towards procurement in the first quarter of 2025.

In addition, Railway Park at St Luke’s Cross is also being upgraded and is waiting on delivery of play equipment.

Welcoming the news, Oliver Moran, Green Party councillor for Cork City North East, said: “I’ve been working with residents across the area on additional playgrounds in Mayfield and Montenotte.

“It’s something that residents can take real satisfaction at the pace the project is moving along. The development of Tinker’s Cross Park is another project that will benefit the entire community.

“The purpose of this funding is special too. It’s to support communities that have welcomed people from Ukraine and other countries over the past number of years. An appropriate way of celebrating that is with places [where] children, regardless of background, can play together.

“Other parks in the ward will also benefit from the community climate action fund,” Mr Moran added.

“This includes €25,000 for a children’s bike track at the Railway Park and €50,000 to take the St Luke’s Community Garden to ‘the next level’, as well as other climate-related projects in the Mayfield area.”

Christmas fundraiser

Glanmire’s Deirdre Cregan is raising money for the local Barnardos family centre to make Christmas a little easier for families that need their help.

Having bought gifts and vouchers for individual children previously, this Christmas they are raising the bar and hope to get the whole community of Glanmire involved.

WellBean coffee has offered to run a Spinathon on its premises on Saturday, December 14, from 8am to 4pm. They will have collection buckets on the day and all riders will be individually sponsored.

They have a GoFundMe for people that can’t make it on the day or for anyone else that would like to donate to this worthy cause, at: https://tinyurl.com/3w8bu5e2
