Speed cameras catch 28 speeding vehicles in first two hours of National Slow Down Day

Speed cameras have detected some 28 vehicles speeding in the first two hours of National Slow Down Day, while gardaí have also been out performing speed checks this morning.

An initiative of An Garda Síochána, National Slow Down Day runs from 7am today until 7am tomorrow, Friday.

In the first two hours of the operation, GoSafe speed cameras checked the speeds of 15,029 vehicles, and detected 28 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

The Garda Press Office has noted that these initial figures are based on GoSafe detections alone and will be higher once An Garda Síochána personnel detections, which are not available at the moment, are added.

Some of the of high speeds recorded include:

  • A vehicle travelling at 113km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the R245 Cashelshanaghan Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
  • A vehicle travelling at 69km/h in a 50km/h Zone on the R708 Ballytruckle Green, Waterford 
  • A vehicle travelling at 124km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N22 Gortatlea, Tralee. 
  • A vehicle travelling at 70km/h in a 60km/h Zone on the N25 Grahormack Tagoat, Wexford.

A garda spokesperson said An Garda Síochána wished to thank drivers for their compliance during the first two hours of National Slow Down Day, which they said was making Irish roads safer for all road users.

“We continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads,” they said.

An Garda Síochána will issue further updates throughout the day.
