Historic North Cork 'extraordinary treasure' in need of further investment

One of Cork’s stately homes needs sustained funding to safeguard it as ‘a key destination’, Cork North West general-election candidate John Paul O’Shea has suggested.

The Fine Gael councillor described Doneraile House and Court as an “extraordinary treasure to Cork”. 

Progress had been made at the site, he said, but that further commitment was needed to transform it in to “a world-class heritage site and regional economic driver”.

“The restoration work done, so far, has breathed new life in to this historic estate, transforming it in to a key destination for both local visitors and tourists from further afield.”

Famous

The estate, near the North Cork village of Doneraile, is famous for its literary and historical connections. Edmund Spenser wrote the famous poem, The Faerie Queen, while living nearby. The writer Elizabeth Bowen lived in Kildorrery, in Bowen’s Court (since demolished).

“The conservation-management plan has identified the orangery — constructed from 1825-26 and dismantled in the 1970s — as an important missing element that would greatly enhance the historical authenticity and visitor experience at Doneraile,” the councillor said.

“While multiple sources of funding are being explored, I firmly believe that the Office of Public Works has the unique capability to manage and grow Doneraile with a strategic, forward-thinking approach.

“This estate deserves proactive stewardship, not just piecemeal repairs. The OPW has already demonstrated its ability, investing over €2.26m in Doneraile Court since 2022, setting a strong foundation for this iconic site.”

The Doneraile estate attracted 520,000 visitors to its parkland and 9,000 to the restored home during 2023. “These numbers make it clear: Doneraile is cherished, not only by the local community, but by visitors from far and wide. So, further investment in Doneraile House and Court is not just about preserving a historic site: It’s about investing in our community, our heritage, and our shared future.
