Gardaí urging people out and about in Cork for Halloween to be 'safe and sensible'
Gardaí are urging people to take care this evening as they 'get into the spirit' of Halloween.
With preparations well under way across Cork for Halloween festivities, gardaí are advising people to be safe and sensible this evening.
According to Met Éireann, tonight will be mostly cloudy and mainly dry as ghosts, ghouls and witches make their way from home to home with bags and buckets in search of sweet treats.
There will be a few patches of drizzle, with some mist patches in places also.
Lowest temperatures will reach seven to 10 degrees, with light southwesterly breezes.
Advice shared for trick-or-treaters by An Garda Síochána is that all children should be accompanied by an adult, to trick-or-treat in lit up areas and ensure they are highly visible to road users.
Gardaí are also asking drivers to slow down and show extra caution while driving over the next 48 hours as more people, including small children, will be out on roads.
While in the spirit of fun, throwing eggs, flour, and setting off fireworks may seem like a good idea, gardaí have reminded people that these acts may be considered a criminal offence.
Illegal fireworks and bonfires can not only be extremely dangerous but also cause lasting environmental damage.
The nationwide operation focusing on preventing and detecting the sale of fireworks, and associated public order and anti-social behaviour issues during the Halloween period, Operation Tombola, over the past decade, has seen the seizure of 1,218 explosives to the value of €225,000.
Superintendent Ann-Marie Twomey, of the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau said: "Those who attempt to profit from the sale of illegal fireworks by putting them into the hands of those that are not licensed to safely use them are proactively targeted by gardaí nationwide.
“The fireworks are seized so as to prevent anti-social behaviour and dangerous incidents including possible injury and we will prosecute those responsible.
"As always, we prioritise the safety of young people and the wider community. If you are celebrating Halloween this year, we want you to safely enjoy the night and we’re asking young people in particular to please be sensible.
"You can get into the spirit of Halloween without causing distress to others, potentially endangering yourself by using illegal fireworks or doing anything potentially criminal that will get you into bother.
"If you, or a friend or someone in your group becomes in danger or in an emergency at any time during Halloween, please call 999 or 112 for assistance."
