Cork city firefighters to raise funds for sick children by making 'symbolic journey'

The newest recruits to Cork City Fire Brigade are set to undertake a fundraising mission that will see them push and pull a vintage fire truck through the streets of the city in aid of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation.

Mercy Heroes 2024 is an initiative that brings communities together to raise funds for the Mercy University Hospital Foundation’s Teens and Young Adult Appeal to support young patients through the challenges that serious illness brings.

Starting from Cork City Fire Brigade’s Anglesea St headquarters at 10am on Friday, the firefighters will make stops for donations along Oliver Plunkett St, Patrick St, Opera Lane, and Daunt Sq, before ending their journey at Mercy University Hospital (MUH) at around 3pm.

“The journey we will make on Friday will be easy in comparison to the journey that so many teenagers and young adults face as patients at the Mercy as they endure serious illnesses like cancer,” said Peter Spillett, on behalf of the probationary firefighters.

“Our symbolic journey is a tribute to the resilience of these young patients facing the toughest battles of their lives, and we are proud to support Mercy Heroes and highlight the cause and raise funds.”

The fundraising mission is one of many initiatives by schools, companies, and community groups supporting the cause and making a meaningful impact on the lives of those being treated at MUH.

Mercy University Hospital Foundation interim CEO and head of fundraising Deirdre Finn emphasised how support for campaigns such as Mercy Heroes can make such a difference.

“We want teenagers and young adults being treated in the Mercy to get back to enjoying their lives and fulfilling their hopes and dreams like every young person deserves,” said Ms Finn.

“We are grateful to Cork City Fire Brigade for supporting Mercy Heroes once again and highlighting the importance of this.”
