South East Ward City Councillor Peter Horgan has secured works from the NTA to install a real time information sign at the bus shelter on Maryborough Hill opposite Broadale and Maryborough Ridge.
“I know the first thing people will think on this news is will the buses show up because of the issues we have been facing with driver shortages and now the timetables changes on routes like the 220,” said Cllr Horgan.
“My hope is that once these issues are resolved, and I believe they must be resolved with the urgency demanded of them, that shelters like the one in broadale will then be equipped with real time updates.
“Yes, the info is on the app also, but the footfall of this bus shelter demands State of the art information updates for People to be Able to make the informed choice on when the next bus is due and leave the car at home.
“It’s a small piece of a very large transport puzzle that I am working on daily as a local councillor.
“According to the NTA with regard to the provision of RTPI units our current policy is to integrate RTPI signs into new bus shelters, given the need for an independent power supply for the sign.
“Under energy regulations we are not allowed to use public lighting power supplies even if those are convenient and adjacent.
“So, instead, we invest in a single power supply for both the bus shelter and the RTPI sign. One of the main reasons for these costs is the need for an independent power supply for RTPI signs.
“These signs require an electrical supply in order to operate and there is a prohibition under statutory regulation, derived from European legislation, that prevents the NTA from taking an electrical connection from an existing public lighting power supply, even where convenient and adjacent. Regarding the bus shelter located at bus stop number 231291, this shelter is ducted for an ESB connection and is to be connected to the ESB network.
“Accordingly, it should be feasible to install an RTPI unit at the bus stop, suspended from the roof of the shelter. In the meantime, while we ensure that ESB Networks has energised the shelter, and the installation of the RTPI unit is being arranged, we note that all of the information available on such RTPI Displays is also available through the NTA’s app for RTPI.”
The “TFI Real Time Ireland App” and the RTPI Displays are supported by the same back of house data feed.
