More than 6,000 volunteers removed an estimated 38 tonnes of litter as part of the Big Beach Clean in Cork.

The event took place last week and saw more than 15,000 people across Ireland take part, removing more than 95 tonnes of litter nationwide.

In Cork, more than 100 groups took part in the initiative, with clean-ups taking place in various locations throughout the county.

Cork GAA had a total of 90 clubs sign up for World Clean Up Day as part of the Big Beach Clean 2024.

The groups started at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and headed to Green Party councillor Dan Boyle, Lord Mayor of Cork, cheered them on. Around 60% of the litter found by the groups was recyclable.

“We’re delighted to see so many volunteers and community groups across the country take part in the Big Beach Clean,” said An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme manager Bronagh Moore.

“This year’s event was the largest yet and a powerful reminder of the collective impact we can make together.”

As part of the event, Siúlóid at Clonakilty Community Resource Centre had 40 people clean Inchydoney Beach, where the group removed 12kg of litter.

Thirty cub and beaver scouts from Youghal also took part in the event, which saw them picking up litter and exploring local biodiversity in Glenbower Woods.

Elaine Doyle from Clean Coasts spoke to the cubs and beavers group about the organisation before they had a play in the playground and enjoyed a hot chocolate provided by The Old Thatch.

Clean Coasts joined forces with Kia Ireland, which supported the initiative this year by providing clean-up kits and supplies to volunteers throughout the country.

Head of marketing and PR at Kia Ireland, Cathal Kealey, said: “Kia Ireland was delighted to support the Big Beach Clean initiative from Clean Coasts and witness the dedication and hard work of the Clean Coasts staff and volunteers throughout the country.

“Their work is truly inspiring.”
