Five Cork projects are among 48 that are to receive funding to purchase vehicles specifically designed to transport people who have mobility issues or people undergoing cancer treatments.

Community Development Minister Heather Humphreys announced more than €2m in funding for the 48 vehicles, under Measure 2 of the CLÁR programme.

The funding will also be used to purchase vehicles for community groups that provide meals-on-wheels services and for search-and-rescue organisations.

Overall, Ms Humphreys announced €2,100,768 in funding, to be split across the 48 projects.

Among the Cork projects awarded are the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre in Cork, which is due to receive €52,000 for a modified mobility vehicle, and the Irish Wheelchair Association, which is due to receive €44,768 for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle including clamping equipment.

“I am very pleased to be supporting these vital services in our most remote rural communities,” said Ms Humphreys.

“Each of the recipients of funding plays a vital role in providing essential services to those who are most in need in our communities, be it from a mobility aspect or through the provision of meals-on-wheels services.

“The supports provided by our first responders and our search-and-rescue teams are of immense importance, and I am delighted to be in a position to support these very worthy community groups.

“We owe a great deal to these organisations, and to all the individuals who volunteer with them.”

The 2024 CLÁR Programme incorporates three measures. The first is developing community facilities and amenities; Measure 2 for mobility, cancer care, meals on wheels, and community first responders transport; and Measure 3 for the islands.

Successful applications under the first and third measures will be announced at a later date.
