All About Cork: Cllr Horgan seeks upgrade of swimming pool

“The Gus Healy Swimming Pool in the Douglas/Ballinlough ares is well overdue for an upgrade,” said Cllr Horgan.

Labour Party Councillor Peter Horgan has submitted a motion to Cork City Council to kickstart a full upgrade of the Gus Healy Swimming pool.

“The Gus Healy Swimming Pool in the Douglas/Ballinlough ares is well overdue for an upgrade,” said Cllr Horgan.

“It is in the ownership of the local authority and services a large number of schools and clubs in the immediate area. It deserves to be state of the art. The National Swimming Strategy published this week underpins the need to expand this pool to Olympic size.

“If we are serious about competing in Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships and other international galas we need a better swimming pool set up here in the Douglas/Ballinlough area, which is locally supported. It is critical to encourage active lifestyles at all ages too, along with socialisation across generations.

“So many people raise this issue with me. We need a proper pool for our community.”

The motion submitted by Cllr Horgan is: That this Council will seek central funding to enhance, expand and promote swimming in the south side of the city through a redevelopment of the Gus Healy Swimming Pool which will consider, among other elements that it be Olympic sized.

Cllr Horgan has also sought intervention for safer pedestrian crossing in Douglas village at the junction with Barry’s in the hope of reducing close calls between motorists and pedestrians.

“Safer, more frequent pedestrian crossings are vital For Douglas and the whole South East Ward,” said Cllr Horgan.

“I have sought for temporary works to restore the old crossing here to protect both pedestrians and motorists. Families pushing buggies run a gauntlet here trying to cross every day of the week and we need to put safety measures in asap. I have written to the executive on this and will be seeking works to be considered within funding arrangements in the budget for something more permanent.

“Utilising our urban retail and village areas safely is crucial in encouraging more footfall and support to shopping, eating and being, more local.”
