Three Cork artists shortlisted in prestigious portrait competitions

Cork photographer David Creedon, whose work regularly features in The Echo, has been shortlisted for the AIB Portrait Prize at the National Gallery for his photograph 'Miss Evans in her Sweetshop'.

Three Cork artists have been shortlisted from hundreds of entries for a pair of prestigious national portrait prize competitions at the National Gallery of Ireland.

In all, 46 artists from across 20 counties have been shortlisted by the National Gallery for this year’s AIB Portrait Prize and AIB Young Portrait Prize.

Three Leeside artists feature in the shortlists this year, with two announced for the AIB Portrait Prize and one for the AIB Young Portrait Prize.

Photographer David Creedon, whose work regularly features in The Echo, is shortlisted in the AIB Portrait Prize for his photograph Miss Evans in her Sweetshop, and Joy Kavanagh is listed for her self-subject In Bloom, an acrylic on wooden board.

Young Cork artist Avni Mittal’s Inner Reflection, a piece in acrylic on canvas, has been shortlisted in the AIB Young Portrait Prize.

The winner of the AIB Portrait Prize will receive a cash prize of €15,000 and will be commissioned to create a work for the national portrait collection, for which they will be awarded a further €5,000. Two additional awards of €1,500 will be given to highly commended works.

The AIB Young Portrait Prize returns for its sixth year in 2024 as a showcase for the artistic talent of young people from across the island of Ireland.

Five winners, and an overall winner, will be selected from a shortlist of hundreds of entries from young people aged three to 18.

Winners will receive a bespoke art box and a cash prize, and the overall competition winner will be awarded a personalised wooden box of high-quality art materials and a cash prize of €500.

Exhibitions of the shortlisted works in both competitions run at the National Gallery of Ireland from November 9 to March 9.

The winners of the prizes will be announced at a ceremony held in the National Gallery of Ireland on November 27.
