Mercier Press to open new offices and venue for literary events on Cork's northside

The new Mercier Press base will be located in St. Luke's on Cork's northside.

A Cork institution, which this year celebrates the 80th anniversary of publishing its first book, is returning to the northside to celebrate the literary milestone.

Mercier Press will be opening its new offices and venue for literary events, a pop-up book shop and book club meetings in St Luke's this week.

As the company's Director of Books, Dee Collins, explained: "We used to be on Bridge Street just over St Patrick's Bridge from Patrick Street so we decided to mark this milestone by moving back to the northside.

"The new base in St Luke's will host our offices, literary events with our authors and we also will be having a pop-up bookshop at the premises.

"We've also been asked by a local book club to host some of their meetings."

Ms Collins explained that Mercier Press published its first book in 1944 while it opened its shop on Bridge Street, which remained open until the 1980s, in 1946.

Among the first writers to host an event at the new premises will be Kerry poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, who has just published a volume of his favourite poems.
