A Cork man has been left in a critical condition following a motorbike accident while travelling in Thailand.

David Horgan from Douglas sustained severe injuries following the single-person moped accident, which happened on Saturday morning.

Mr Horgan, who is well known in the Douglas area and is the senior goalkeeper at Tramore Athletic FC, is currently in a critical condition in the intensive care unit in Phuket Hospital, Thailand.

Mr Horgan’s injuries, include a bleed on the brain, multiple broken bones in the face and skull, and multiple severe fractures across the face.

The young soccer star also has a deep wound on his forehead, a split in the roof of the mouth, and broken teeth, as well as various cosmetic wounds on the face.

A fundraiser has been set up on behalf of Mr Horgan’s family to help them pay for the mounting medical expenses following what was described as a “devastating bike accident”.

So far it has raised more than €72,500 to help cover the costly medical bills.

“Any donation no matter how little will help cover David’s medical expenses,” read a post on the page.

Appealing for donations, the Douglas native’s family wrote on the GoFundMe page:

“David will need several major operations to address these injuries and to give him a chance at recovery.

“The medical expenses are mounting quickly, and we kindly ask for your help to ensure that David receives the best possible care.

“David is a beloved friend, family member, team-mate, boyfriend, and colleague.

“He is known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit. We are devastated by this accident and are doing everything we can to support him during this incredibly challenging time.”

“Thank you for your generosity, prayers, and support.

“Together, we can help David get through this and back on the path to recovery.”

On their Facebook page Tramore Athletic FC said: “David is a beloved club member and team-mate, known for his humour and spirit and has been an ever-present in between the posts in Tramore Park since he was a child.

“We are devastated by this accident, and we appreciate every donation towards David’s medical expenses.

“Every cent will count and will go directly towards his treatment and recovery.”
